Tax Extension

Glosario de trading

Definicion

A tax extension is a formal request made to a tax authority for additional time to file a tax return beyond the standard deadline. In the United States, individual taxpayers can request a six-month extension using IRS Form 4868. Importantly, a tax extension extends the filing deadline but does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed.

Ejemplo

A trader who has had a complex year of trading activity — involving multiple asset classes, short sales, and corporate actions — might file a tax extension to allow more time to accurately document all taxable events. While the extension avoids penalties for late filing, the trader must still estimate and pay any taxes owed by the original deadline to avoid interest charges. Active traders should work closely with a tax professional to ensure all trading gains, losses, and relevant deductions are correctly reported.
