Trading Glossary
XBT is an alternative ticker symbol for Bitcoin that some exchanges and data providers use instead of BTC. The "X" follows the ISO 4217 convention for currencies that are not issued by a specific country, similar to XAU for gold. On trading platforms, Bitcoin pairs may therefore appear as XBT/USD or BTC/USD.
A trader wants to trade Bitcoin against the US dollar and searches for BTC/USD on a platform, but finds the instrument listed as XBT/USD. Both symbols refer to the same underlying asset, so the price movements are identical.
Bitcoin is highly volatile and can move several percent within hours. If the trader holds a position of 0.5 XBT and the price rises by $2,000, the trade gains $1,000. The same move in the opposite direction causes a loss of the same size.
Before trading crypto in a prop firm account, traders should check whether crypto instruments are allowed, how weekend trading is handled and how large a position can be without exceeding the risk limits.
