Xetra - Definition & Meaning

Trading Glossary

Definition

Xetra is the fully electronic trading system of Deutsche Börse in Frankfurt and the leading trading venue for German shares and ETFs. The DAX and other major German indices are calculated based on prices from Xetra. Regular trading on Xetra runs from 9:00 to 17:30 CET.

Example

A trader follows the DAX and notices that a large share of the daily volume comes in shortly after the Xetra opening at 9:00 CET and again before the closing auction at 17:30 CET. These phases often bring tighter spreads and stronger price moves in German shares and DAX-based instruments.

Instead of trading all day, the trader focuses on the first hour after the Xetra opening, when liquidity is highest and breakouts tend to be more reliable. Outside Xetra hours, DAX CFDs are still tradable with many providers, but price movements are often thinner and less predictable.

For prop traders, knowing the Xetra schedule helps to plan trading sessions, avoid low-liquidity phases and set realistic profit targets for each trading day.
